With the growth of bass, garage, funky and every other UK-initiated dance music genre under the sun, we often find ourselves looking a lot closer at the concept of international collaboration here at The 3000 Network, being so proud of just how much these sounds have grown and expanded in a relatively short space of time. However, there is no getting away from the fact that there is a tonne of differentiation from city to city here in the UK, with today’s journalistic outing giving us the opportunity to explore a very exciting link up between two of the UK’s most prominent musical hub spots.
First up, we find ourselves in Nottingham as we see the long awaited return of Killjoy, one of the original front runners of this new bass movement, Through his work as one of the most unique producers in the bass / funky crossover realm and his extended behind the scenes work for numerous labels, such as Tumble Audio, FTW and more, Killjoy has cemented himself within UK dance music culture. We then turn up the levels even further as we see Killjoy move down the road to Bristol as we see Sector 7 Sounds host this fantastic new release, a fabulous label imprint headed up by the one and only Boofy.
This new single takes the title ‘Dark Spirit’ and packs a seriously weighty punch, fusing the more explosive areas of UK funky a dark combination of bass manipulation and hard hitting rhythm, exactly what we love to hear from Killjoy if we are being honest. When you take those elements and then add a tasty additional slice of tidily arranged breaks samples and a haunted sense of soundscaped vocal work, we sure are in for a hell of a treat. This is a fantastic way for Killjoy to make his musical return after somewhat of a short hiatus, especially with an exciting EP to follow just around the corner.
