Womxn of Bass with Ellie Sabine-Singh

Posted 3/4/19 in

This weeks #WomxnInBass is Dutchie, Bristol based DJ, producer and singer-songwriter. She’s the resident DJ for Hold Tight Records and Co-Director of Revinyl C.I.C which offers vinyl DJ courses and free entry open deck vinyl events in Bristol – super dope! We love the work she’s doing and Bristol locals will have seen her name popping up on posters all over the city. This summer is looking tasty for Dutchie, so be sure to show love when she comes to a festival near you!

When I hear that 1 in 49 music producers are womxn I think…

I am 1 in 49! Wish that ratio wasn’t so high but it’s definitely changing

The underground music scene in Bristol is…

Popping off! So many people doing different things, lots of new music coming up all the time. It’s also very community based, the support I have received from the Bristol scene is overwhelming.

When I wake up I…

Have a coffee.

Track I’m currently rinsing is…

DJ Madd – Booty Wine and Mr Mud – Mek Sum Noyz

Quick plug…

Festival season 2019 looking something like this… Love Saves The Day, Balter, Wonderfields, Glastonbury (TBA), Boomtown (Tangled Roots), Nozstock (more TBA)

Phrase I seriously over use…

‘Vibes’

I love what I do because…

It takes me to lots of different places and brings me together with lots of different people, which in turn inspires me to make more music! I also get serious satisfaction watching people enjoying my selections

It wouldn’t have happened without…

The Hold Tight and Revinyl crew encouraging me when I first moved to Bristol. Played my first ever set for them and the rest is history!

Biggest struggle in this business is…

Time management! Can’t answer anything without checking my diary. Comparing yourself to others (don’t do it kids). Also managing your own perspective on productivity levels… I always feel like I should be doing more but sometimes you need to acknowledge what you have already achieved and not downplay it!

I aspire to be a womxn like…

My mum cos she’s a legend

In the rave you will probably catch me…

playing tunes or mooching round looking for a sofa haha

I love creating…

A new tune after I’ve had creative block

My proudest career moment so far was…

Having my vocals released on vinyl (on Infernal Sounds with Bukkha and Subtle Mind) and stepping in to cover Ace Hood on main stage Tokyo World! Talk about right place right time…

Most memorable thing that’s ever happened at a set…

Getting middle aged mums in heels skanking out to 140 jungle at Old Market assembly last year! Cherry on top was on my way out of the venue, one of them coming up to me saying ‘I really liked what you were doing with the um..’ *does the classic DJ mime move*

My favourite producer is…

I always struggle to name one so: L U C Y, Egoless, DJ Madd, Kreed… There is more but the list would be too long

In a dream world…

I would have a tasty music studio that isn’t at home! Good things come to those who wait.
