Womxn In Bass with Ellie Sabine-Singh – KG

Posted 27/3/19 in

KG – North London’s UK Funky Queen is known for her Afrobeat inspired, Funky bangers!

From dominating the UK club circuit during the early-mid noughties to staying more than active on London’s thriving radio scene today. You probably caught her on NTS, Reprezent Radio, Worldwide FM, Rinse FM or her newly acquired, specialist monthly slot on Foundation FM. KG’s broadcasting and DJ talents are soaring to new heights, which is apparent when on the receiving end of highly regarded co-signs, from the likes of BBC 1Xtra’s Jamz Supernova and Tash LC.

This #WomxnInBass is an innovator known for creating time transcending music, and with a new project launching this Spring, we wait with baited breath to hear what she’s bringing to our speakers next.

I love having a show on Foundation FM because…

I love having a radio show on foundation.fm because it is such a freeing, vibrant, creative safe space. People need to recognise that women are at the forefront of this!! We are not playing games anymore! The station mirrors my values, it’s inclusive of all diverse creative types & persons – I mean how amazing is that. FFM provides a space for the underground music scene to thrive and that makes it home for me.

This scene can support black womxn more by…

Allowing us to be at the forefront for once! There is a lack of visibility for black women. We are still a minority. Festivals, live streaming events, club gigs, we need more diversified lineups – period. I sometimes feel like the scene isn’t that inclusive because of laziness and inaccurate, preconceived notions of gender and race. Promoters need to be a bit more explorative when it comes to booking new talent outside of just sheer popularity and aesthetics. It is so frustrating this ‘one in one out’ system in music for women of colour! Black women in particular I feel are underrepresented ESPECIALLY where electronic music is concerned. I know black women in Bass, UK Funky, House, Grime etc that are SO dope at what they do. Such a shame that we have twice as many biases (being black & female) to contend with when it comes to the music industry. Everything ELSE is considered BUT our talent/skill – that has got to change. Hence why I work so damn hard, trying to get to the point where I can also open doors for my ladies!

When I wake up I…

I check my emails and Instagram for any messages. I often meditate, I like to start my day with my mind clear and focused. I’ve recorded a few affirmations as well so I play that back to remind myself that I am a Queen regardless of what anyone else thinks! Great confidence booster as well 😉

Track I’m currently rinsing is…

Every UK Funky & Afro Bass set I do, I have to mix in Culoe De Song’s – ‘Rambo’ – the tune is too bad wahhh! I say for leisure, when I am winding down, chilling I rinse off Kelela’s – ‘Waiting’ (Kaytranada Remix) – that beat is so sexy haha – what a vibe!

Quick plug…

Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Mixcloud & Soundcloud @KarenNyameKG . I am currently working on my new EP which will be released via GCA 😉 We are potentially looking at a Summer release. I have a couple remixes and BIGGG tracks in the works as well so stay tuned! Keep an eye on my socials!

Phrase I seriously over use…

‘Jheezeeee’ is my go to phrase literally every minute of the day lol!

I love what I do because…

I am at my best when I am performing, conceptualising ideas, producing music, on radio – all of the above! Music is the pulse of the world so I am grateful that my gift allows me to contribute to that in some way shape or form. Next stop – we go international! 😉

It wouldn’t have happened without…

I’m connected to many amazing people who have continued to assist me in my journey despite me wanting to pack it in at times. Real ones! They know who they are!

Biggest struggle in this business is…

Having to create even when there aren’t many eyes on you or creating when things seemed to have slowed down. Being seen as an ’emerging’ artist when you have been grinding for 10 years plus! It’s all mad! Having to push against the tide of critics, it takes so much dedication, mastering of ones craft and years of hustling. It can become very exhausting.

A womxn I look up to is…

Honey Dijon is the one! DJ, fashion icon, love her cross-genre DJ performances – she sets the bar for me personally. Love what she stands for, advocating for women of colour AND diverse sexualities in music, behind the decks and on the dance-floor. So powerful!

In the rave you will probably catch me…

Skanking real lowwww, especially when that bass is thumping LOL! Vibing with a little vodka and cranberry juice in my hand! If I know the DJ as well then it’s straight, hype energy – gassing them up on the decks!

I love creating…

Dirtttyy UK Funky beatsss and melodic, hypnotic afro bassy melodies

My proudest career moment so far was…

Hosting guest shows on Rinse FM, NTS Radio & BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2018 – managed to get ALL of them in the bag that year. Proudest moments for me! Spoke it into existence!

The last Instagram account I followed was…

Was a really cute dog called ‘Kali’ she is SO cute, she has her own IG page WTF! Hahaha (random shit I know – hey don’t judge me!)

Most memorable thing that’s ever happened at a set…

Threw on a old school Rosie Gaines classic in a room full of high energy House enthusiasts – unexpectedly I was prompted to wheeeeeel up the tune – that night was so liiiive! That crowd knows a banger when they hear one.

My favourite producer is…

Kaytranada by FAR is my fave new age, Future House & RNB producer. The groove master, the way he designs his basslines oh my gosh the BOUNCEEEEE in his drums ohhhhhhhhhhhh

In a dream world…

I’d be touring the globe, hosting stages, shows, coming back to London to do one off specials on BBC Radio 1/1Xtra then boom off again on a flight somewhere! Goals!
