Here at The 3000 Network, one of the most important things to us as a journalistic collective of bass music fans, is that we stay as up to date with the numerous different goings on around the scene as we possibly can. We heard tell of an exciting run of releases about to embark from today’s guest feature, so we simply couldn’t resist reaching out and seeing what was going to be happening over the next few weeks.
Lockdown has effected everyone in different ways, there’s no question about that, but despite the hardship and horrific effects on nightlife and dance music in general, some people have found the strength to fight against that constant onslaught of bad news to create something new, which is exactly what we see from DEAN in today’s exclusive interview and guest mix feature. For those that aren’t aware, DEAN is without a doubt one of the most exciting new faces to emerge across the last two years, who just so happens to have a very exciting run of free downloads dropping over the course of the next month.
This is why we simply had to jump into a quick Q/A to find out a little bit more about his future plans and musical direction.
He has also provided us with a sizzling new mix selection as the latest edition of the 3000 Bass Exclusive mix series, one of our most popular outlets for up and coming DJ’s to unleash the fire they have on offer. You can check out both the mix and the full length Q/A below:
So first up, how has the last year or so been for yourself production wise, has the lockdown effected your output much?
This whole DEAN project was born because of lockdown if I’m honest, I was furloughed for 17 weeks and needed to keep myself busy so I decided to start a fresh alias, iv had time to sit and build a following, make connections on social media and show people who I am and what I’m about, lockdown has been amazing for me.
What’s been the driving force in your switching up your sound so much?
I’ve been involved in producing for about 14 years now, and my music has always been abit more ‘fluffy’ so to say, always going with very vocally vibes house music and safe drums, but in real life I’m a big greebo, I love heavy dubstep and rock music, I love bass music but for some reason never really pushed to make it, now I’m making heavier stuff, I feel like iv found the DEAN sound.
Who are some other people that people can look for working in this realm?
I am very passionate about showing off the talent we have in the UK bass scene right now, so many names to put here but to narrow a list down to 3 people I’d have to say Sabre, he produces the MADDEST sounding bass design heavy productions, 1997, he has this crazy style that is very unique to his tunes, defo one to look into and Jacko, he’s one who’s on the up massively, I love his style!
Where do you want to take this sound?
I want people to hear my music and know its a DEAN track, iv been told iv got very distinctive drums so I’ll move forward with that, I like mixing genres alot, UK funky is another passion of mine, you can hear the influence of that in my music.
How does it go down in the dance?
I’m not sure yet, this is something I’m nervous to see when the world goes back to normal! Let’s hope it goes down well!
So we’re gonna be seeing regular drops from yourself over the month, what made you settle on this format for releasing the tracks?
Throughout July I’m dropping 4 tracks each Friday, all free downloads. I’m doing this because it’s my birthday month, so why not just go all in and put loads of music out! 4 of my best productions, all bass heavy and ‘middle of set’ kind of tracks, I’m intrigued to see what this does to my social profile too.
We’ve heard of a very tidy guestmix for 3000 Bass you have en route, what can we expect from that?
The 3000 Bass guest mix is something very very special to me, a real journey of who I am as a DJ and what I listen to personally, all mixed live with acappela mashups the lot, it’s a mix to show how capable I am as a DJ!
What’s next from yourself?
I have so much music made I could release another 10 tracks before the end of the year, but I’m going to take it easy and see where things go, I have 3 labels on my radar that I want to release on, 3000 Bass being one of them, Roska Kicks & Snares and About Last Night Records, I have a UK funky track with Griz-O coming out on a very special label iv been trying to get on for over a decade now which I am so hyped about! All that and I’m now running a record label called SPACED with Sabre, so busy busy really! Can’t believe that before lockdown I wasn’t anywhere near involved in anything like this!
Look out for DEAN’s awesome run of free downloads, every Friday in July starting on the 9th, available on his Soundcloud page which you can find below:
