Following on from the storming success of his recent Codeine Espresso 1 EP, Littlefoot returns with a follow-up instalment, radiating fresh, future-wave UKG rhythms on his brand new release – Codeine Espresso 2. With CE1 being listed by publications such as CRACK and DJMag, there is no doubt the Nottingham based producer had high hopes to live up to – and boy has he done that.
The 4-tracker opens with club ready 2-stepper Persian Tom, with a minimalistic rhythm paving the way for a wobbling pad sequence to take centre stage throughout. A galloping breakbeat in the second half of Persian Tom lifts this number to the highest heights of stomping goodness. This atmospheric adaptation is one that rings perfectly through the dark and dreary winter nights.
With an organ vibrating through the depths of Lites Down Low, this one definitely transforms the vintage energy of 90’s garage with candy-coloured melodic strains. The second track of the EP draws on a skeletal form of the genre with a muscly new turn, staying true to its roots in an effortless way. Clean and polished, Lites Down Low hints at a more experimental edge to Littlefoot’s productions.
Revamping a decade-old groover with a remaster and digital release, Littlefoot brings the 8-bit- esque Sell My Soul into the modern day with its calculated approach to music production. Gaining support from DJ EZ, Annie Nightingale and DJ Q, this is a type of classic in the UKG world that’s not to be missed in its updated form. The familiar blend of outlandish instrumentation with a crystalline, almost chipmunk vocal here make Sell My Soul an instant earworm.
Burnin All Nite skilfully combines the likes of old school producers such as Wookie with a sultry ambience not unlike that of Burial. Swiftly transforming into a dark floorfiller, the closing track juxtaposes the intensity of the melodic lines with airy vocals weaving through the acid infused synths in the second half of the piece.
To describe Codeine Espresso 2, only one word is needed – versatility. Not only that of the producer, but also UK Garage within itself, with its ever-changing twists and redefinition of music. Who better to redefine music than a man who’s trials end so successfully? Littlefoot will have you itching to move with Codeine Espresso 2, and we can’t get enough.
