Since the exciting re-remergence of garage to a more commercially scaled audience of over the past two to three years, we have seen numerous labels and platforms jossling to get to the top of the tree, which in turn has lead to some very healthy competition.
However, if we are being 100% real, there is one label that has stepped into the driving seat with relative ease and that of course is Conducta’s Kiwi Rekordings. Over the past 24 months we have seen their branding and incredible catalogue supply us with hit after hit, not only introducing us to a wide array of new garage talent, but also giving those already established names a home from which to work from.
The big success story from the label over the lockdown period was of course the Kiwi Kup, which saw eight of the brightest UKG lights pick up arms for a very well spirited remix-based clash tournament, which after four high quality qualifications saw Gemi claim the title. He returned to Kiwi this weekend to drop his debut EP with the label, landing two very colourful garage originals with one of the most enjoyable social media campaigns we have witnessed in recent years.
We kick off our examination of the project with a dive into ‘Buggin’, a wavy title track that slots perfectly into the Kiwi Discography as an array of bouncy drum designs and groovy melodic twists join forces beneath some incredibly smooth production techniques. It’s a great look into what Gemi’s sound is all about, powerful, precise and full of good energy.
On the flipside to that we take in ‘Together’, a slightly more nostalgic shuffler, dripping with rhythmic energy from start to finish. The drums on this one are something truly special, again, giving us a real look into the quality of Gemi’s production and leaving us wanting another slice of the pie as soon as we can get our hands on it.
