As we have said countless times here at threethousand.co.uk, we are always on the look our for the latest and most innovative creations within the realms of bass music. There aren’t many labels who hit this definition as Swamp 81, a label stooped in creativity and a constantly forward thinking approach to underground dance music, expanding the boundaries and exploring areas as yet undiscovered
How many times have you heard “You know, that sort of Swamp 81 kind of sound?”. That for us summarizes just how ahead of the curve the 81 team are, and their latest release alongside the ever ready pairing of Hypho and Rakjay is just another example of that fact.
Now to begin with, Hypho is an artist so suited to Swamp’s sound that we are surprised this link up hasn’t occurred earlier. He is known for sitting directly between UK bass and dubstep, focussing on the dark and dingey rather than loud and rowdy, which gives his sound a real unique edge in a noise dominated market. Rakjay is also heavily involved with this one, primarily as a vocalist, demonstrating just how many skill sets the current BeatBoss champion is able to cycle between.

The EP is a fantastic showcase of Manchester’s diverse scene, with Hypho supplying the instrumental heat from start to finish, with ‘Round Ere’ kicking us off with a serious bang. Next we look at the lively percussive rolls and spacey reverberations of ‘Yinliao’ before Rakjay arrives on the scene again with some insightful words over the slower, sub heavy instrumental of ‘Graft’. We finish up with a look at the dungeon breaks and shimmering moogy atmospherics of ‘Modular’, rounding up what is for us one of the strongest releases of the year.
