One thing about threethousand.co.uk which has stayed constant over the years is our yearning for diversity in what we feature, and this release from S.M.I.T.H is nothing short of that. The London powerhouse – who’s scored sets alongside some of the biggest names in tech house over the years – returns with a luminescent 4-tracker showcasing his artistry like never before. Spinning flavours of techno, house and even a hint of garage into his very own silk, the Closer EP is filled with earworms that will keep you grooving for days.
Sultry swinger Closer harks back to the golden era of piano house with its glowing instrumentation and snappy drum machines swayed by a sneaky acid-esque bassline. Glossy synth pads here match the soulful yet breathy vocals in a lush equilibrium. The melody is the clear drive for this opener, with the big vocal hook taking centre stage over a cozy styling.
Forming a more disco friendly approach is Like, I Just Want (Your Love), and the title seems perfectly fitting – it’s hard not to love it. Weaving soaring synths and glorious panning paired with classic percussive swings, this track is one that speaks for itself. Simple, yet gloriously executed production and choppy female vocals echoing throughout make this track a definite standout of the release.
Basically is one that bridges the gap between UKG and house with a new groove. Mixing buttery smooth synths with the skippy percussion that has had the UK dancing for the last two decades, female vocals return on this one, this time taking a backseat and allowing the sonic funk to take its course. This vibrant roller brings a melodic swing to your standard modern house.
Bringing the EP full circle is an instrumental version of Closer, bringing more focus to the mastery of the modern house formula in its production, bending the sounds of Ibiza to the likes of British listeners.
While summer may be coming to a close, Closer is an EP that will definitely keep the sunshine fresh in your mind for your own listening pleasure. And with such a clean-cut selection, this one is sure to keep the grooves well into the new year, where the finest live sound systems can do it justice. Get stuck into your permanent slice of the summer sun.
