For the majority of the UK scene, it’s pretty obvious that DJQ has established himself as bassline royalty, both as a celebrated solo producer/ DJ and as ⅓ of the titanic trio of TQD, who’s album last year was hit with nothing but positive responses. It was no surprise to us therefore when we saw that DJQ had been given an official remix on the latest Bugzy Malone & Rag’n’Bone Man collaboration as he continues to establish his underground sound amongst the mainstream music community.
We are greeted in the beginning by wavy atmospheric tones, leading pleasingly into a skippy UKG drum rhythm over which Q layers Bugzy’s smooth vocals, with nostalgic hints of early Gorillaz work. We then immerse ourselves in a high energy build up, stacking with classic Q chord stabs and vibrant string sections. We then pass into a solid breakdown, with classic garage sub lines driving the melodic leads and excitable drum selections forward, with both vocalists having their vocals run in a call and respond motion.
This is exactly the type of remix the UK scene is crying out for, an artist as well established as Q hitting home on his 2-step roots, providing some perfect ammunition for the dance for DJs nationwide.
