Over the course of the last few years, we have seen somewhat of a major revival for the deeper side of dubstep. Although the genre has been plodding away beneath the vision of the mainstream since it’s conception, we are very happy to see more and more projects gaining momentum with more and more popularity ensuing.
The sound itself is become more and more developed, inhaling more influences by the day, with a particularly eastern twang become a prominent feature across the instrumentation and melodics of a number of new originals.
One label who we feel have been pushing all the right sounds in all the right places is Truth’s Deep, Dark & Dangerous imprint. Obviously with Truth being the legends within the dubstep scene that they are, we were always going to expect their label to house some serious heat.
However, this latest drop from JLEON which has appeared online recently, is one of the strongest dubstep releases we have heard in recent years and that is no exaggeration whatsoever.
The EP consists of four absolute heaters, kicking off with the ridiculously hard hitting bass designs of ‘Irazu’, coupled with snapping, organic drums and moody overtones. Next up, the title track ‘Boruca Mask’ arrives, again boasting incredible bass work but this time with more swampy textures, followed by the amazonian instrumental licks of ‘Quetzal’.
Finally the EP finishes up with ‘XasAjj’, yet another display of dubstep genius, with aquatic drums flinging the composition to the left and right and every available opportunity.
The EP drops this Friday, and we couldn’t be more excited. You can check out the previews below:
