A conversation with Blakk Habit | KXVU’s UKG Q&A

Another day, another Q&A as we continue our exclusive UKG series, exploring some of my favourite artists and producers around the UK and the wider sound of garage. The fanbases that have been amassing and the popularity that garage and 2-step sounds have been generating has been nothing short of outstanding, which is why we are very excited to today be talking to one of the most consistent names out there.

Enter: Blakk Habit, an all around UKG machine, from his front running original productions, to a spicy run of remixes to his work behind the scenes with production in a few areas you may have never even guessed, it’s safe to say that Blakk Habit has become one of the most reliable names in the hat, never dissapointing with his colourful, melodic creations, taking the nostalgic side of garage music and refitting it perfectly for 2021 and beyond.

His recent run of releases has been extremely impressive, with bangers dropping on the likes of Garage Shared, Four40, Southpoint and WTS, it only felt right that we got in contact for a quick catch up about the music he has been working on, including a very exciting collaboration with FooR & Deja, the future of his sound, his thoughts on remixing and much more.

You can check out the full Q&A we sat down to put together with him below:

How has 2021 been for you as a whole on a production level?

2021 Has been extremely busy! I’ve been working solidly all year on various originals and remixes, so there’s certainly plenty to come from me

We heard you dipping into more vocal-based stuff earlier in the year, is that something you’re going to be revisiting?

Definitely! I’ve always experimented with my own vocals in a sound design sense (to create unique pads etc), but I definitely plan to feature my vocals in my productions more often

How has this recent release come together with FooR & Deja?

I’ve been working with the guys from FooR for a few years now on releases for Garage Shared! We’ve been talking about a collab for a while but this project seemed like the perfect opportunity to work on something

If you could get your hands on one FooR tune to remix, which one would it be and why?

There’s definitely a few! I do like ‘Rum Woman’ but when I see ‘Fresh’ on the Coors advert I think I’d love to do a version. Both have different vibes but definitely lend themselves to my sound

How is 2022 shaping up for yourself?

2022 is already look good! I’ve got lots of new music planned and some big collabs in the works!

The UKG sound seems to be so popular right now, who are you looking forward to watching on the come up?

There’s so many great producers pushing the sound forward right now. I could give you a list as long as your arm! MPH is a producer that I’m liking at the minute. I like the balance of musicality and big basslines

What’s next for you?

I’m definitely working on some more bodies of work, and at some point I’d love to put an album out! Im very excited to be part of a scene that’s growing every day and Im very much looking forward to the future of UKG
