It has been a fantastic month in the realms of UKG, a genre which is seeing one hell of a resurgence over the last year or so. We are lucky enough to be able to witness the re-birth of one of this countries finest musical exports, with producers around the world now jumping onto the classic UKG sound.
This month in particular has been an exceptional one for the garage and 2-step scenes, as we have seen a lot of the major players put together high quality projects, including a major run of four hard hitting singles from Four40, two exciting drops from Strictly Flava and another hit release from the Kiwi Records camp.
We have decided to compile a quick list of what we feel are May’s top releases, showcasing some of the best newschool garage on the market, available for you to view below:
Pavv – Who Dis – Four40
For us, Pavv is a real unsung heavyweight within the realms of UKG and bassline. Over the years we have heard him put together some of the vibrant, colourful bass and garage compositions we have ever heard, so to see him land on Four40 with an EP of this quality was exciting to see. The title track ‘Who Dis’ is a nostalgic twist on modern UKG flavours, perfect for spicing up any tracklisting.
Various – The Drop – Downplay x Strictly Flava
Now, it’s clear to see that we are huge fans of both of the labels involved in this one as we see Downplay and Strictly Flava team up for a super excited four track remix project. They gather the combined might of both rosters to create four brand new remixes, with Mind Of A Dragon, Kastle, Soulecta and Para all getting stuck into some excellent rethinks. To not have this on our list would have been nothing short of a crime!
Sharda – Peace & Love
We are absolutely loving the direction that the Kiwi Rekords team are taking, furthering the name into more than just a record label, a more into a fully fledged brand. We have seen them put together some fantastic parties and live events since their formation, so the task at hand is to keep up the high quality releases, which they most certainly deliver here with two colourful compositions from Bristol’s own Sharda.
Barely Royal – Follow Me Ft. Gid Sedgwick & SK!N (Soulecta Remix)
For us, this is one of the tracks of the year so far, without a shadow of a doubt. Saucy Music have a real knack for sniffing out the bangers from early, and they have delivered again here as they bring in talented Soulecta for a super choppy rethink of Barely Royal’s ‘Follow Me’, a track featuring Gid Sedgwick and SK!N. Soulecta works wonders from the vocal line, rethinking the entire track into a lively UKG format. Excellent stuff.
Marts – Third Light – Strictly Flava
Ah, Strictly Flava again. In all honestly, it was always going to be a case of choosing which release of theirs from this month to include, because of their incredibly consistency and forward thinking catalogue. We here see them introduce Marts to the label, a producer don’t know much about, but who certainly comes up with the goods on the title track ‘Third Light’. This one also features a wicked relick from the ever dependable On1.
